“She Speaks” is an empowerment workshop that uses the transformative art of poetry and a variety of active learning strategies to open the door toward healing, restoration, and repair. “She Speaks” allows participants to address and assess their emotions, identify barriers that may be impeding their personal growth and most importantly, restore their voices so that they can fully acknowledge their strengths and move in their power.
“We should place less emphasis on whether Black men are resistant to therapy and more on understanding the contexts in which they already feel comfortable talking about their feelings and traumas. “ ~ Howard C. Stevenson, PhD
"Can I Talk To You Black Man" workshop was created because I care deeply about black men and their mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. It's mandatory that we create spaces where black boys and men can feel fully human and openly expressive. Emotional suppression, avoidance and displacement leads to aggression, increased stress levels, and unhealthy coping strategies. We live in a world where displaying your feelings and expressing your emotions is shunned and ridiculed. Black men and boys have chosen silence as a means of self preservation when in reality silence is destructive." Can I Talk To You Black Man" not only provides the space but also offer tools that can assist with identifying with and expressing emotions.
“The Black community suffers from an increased rate of mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression. The increased incidence of psychological difficulties in the Black community is related to the lack of access to appropriate and culturally responsive mental health care, prejudice and racism inherent in the daily environment of Black individuals, and historical trauma enacted on the Black community by the medical field ” - Thomas A. Vance, Phd
“When it Rains It Pours ” In this workshop, we collectively address and uncover how the harm inflicted upon our communities by racial systems have affected us socially, psychologically, spiritually, and physically. The effects of these harms live within our bodies. We will also evaluate and address our emotions as well as identify thinking patterns that lead to increased levels of stress and anxiety. We partake communal healing to address collective harm. We have to acknowledge and dismantle these broken systems while creatively designing alternative systems.
Workshops and Presentations are delivered via Spoken Word Poetry and include discussions, guided questions, writing prompts and/ or activities for personal reflection.
